Smerconish appointed to HUD by Kemp.

Jack Kemp, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, named Michael A. Smerconish of Philadelphia to be administrator and regional federal housing commissioner of HUD's Philadelphia Region 3.

In his new position, Mr. Smerconish will oversee the management and operations of HUD's regional and field offices located in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. He assumes his duties on Aug. 12.

Prior to his nomination, Mr. Smerconish was a Philadelphia-based attorney and businessman, actively involved in Republican politics. He was founder and principal of the real estate firm Main Street Group Inc. The company was involved in land development and residential rehabilitation.

Mr. Smerconish is a 1984 graduate of Lehigh University where he majored in both government and journalism. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and is now a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
