Societe Generale SA, France's second-largest bank by market value, said Wednesday that its profit declined 52% in the second quarter, less than analysts had forecast, on asset writedowns and a higher loan-loss provision.

The bank's stock price rose as much as 5% in Paris trading after it reported net income of $445 million, exceeding the median estimate of 16 analysts in a survey.
