Societe Generale USA, New York, has hired William P. Bowden Jr. as general counsel.

Mr. Bowden was general counsel at CS First Boston Inc., responsible for centralizing its compliance management to minimize regulatory risk. He had also been responsible for new business procedures, and aided in the pending reorganization of Credit Suisse Group's global business.

He joined CS First Boston in 1994. He had been chief counsel at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington from 1991 to 1994 and was a member of the Bush-Clinton transition team.

From 1985 to 1991 he was deputy general counsel at Marine Midland Bank, Buffalo. From 1980 to 1985 he was associate general counsel at Citicorp.
