STEPHEN T. MONAHAN JR. Managing director Continental Bank Corp., Chicago

In the face of a shrinking market, Stephen T. Monahan Jr., 34, has expanded Continental Bank Corp.'s role in placing straight corporate debt.

In fact, in the past four years, he has quadrupled the volume of private debt placements at Continental.

"It takes a 'can do' and 'will do' attitude," says Mr. Monahan. The name of the game, he adds, is landing deals.

Among commercial banks, Mr. Monahan's group placed second in private placements of straight corporate debt, behind only J. P. Morgan & Co., according to Investment Dealers Digest.

Mr. Monahan sees the current, bleak banking climate as an era of opportunity for bankers who can uncover new profit-generating financial products.

"If you are on the revenue production side," he says, "this is a very exciting and prosperous time to be in the business."

A native of Long Island, Mr. Monahan holds an undergraduate degree in finance from Boston College. He began his banking career in 1980 at Irving Trust Co. in New York and eventually enlisted as an assistant vice president in the company's corporate banking division.

Mr. Monahan joined Continental's capital markets group in 1985. He became a vice president in 1989 and was named a managing director in 1990.
