Stratacom to Provide MAC with High-Speed Networking Equipment

Electronic Payment Services Inc. has selected high-speed networking equipment from Stratacom Inc., San Jose, Calif., as the backbone of its MAC electronic funds transfer network - the nation's largest.

Electronic Payment Services' new telecommunications network, which will connect more than 19,000 automated teller machines and 225,000 point of sale terminals nationwide, is expected to reduce the average time for an individual transaction from 18 seconds to 12.

The initial deployment, scheduled for the second quarter of 1996, comprises 13 Stratacom IGX switches.

With the new Stratacom system, Electronic Payment Systems will effectively consolidate its ATM and point of sale networks. Together, they support almost two billion transactions annually.

The telecommunications link also gives the network the ability to add emerging applications.
