Strategies Offered To Fight Check Fraud

WASHINGTON - The Accredited Standards Committee X9, which helps set standards for the banking industry, has published a report designed to help prevent check fraud.

The report, "Check Security Guideline," offers strategies meant to enable financial institutions and consumers to identify and combat check fraud.

The report features a matrix that rates a variety of check security features, including watermarks, holograms, and colored ink.

"The matrix will serve as a concise reference for manufacturers and users in determining which security features best meet their needs for fraud prevention," said Christopher Dowdell, vice president at Chemical Banking Corp. and chairman of the working group that assembled the report.
