Synchrony issues new credit cards for airline Cathay Pacific

Synchrony Financial is issuing the first-ever U.S. credit cards for Cathay Pacific Airways.

The cards, which were launched Tuesday, can be used anywhere that Visa cards are accepted. They may prove attractive to frequent travelers to Asia.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific offers flights from Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Cardholders will earn more rewards points for purchases made outside of the U.S. than they will for domestic purchases.

Stamford, Conn.-based Synchrony, which was spun off from General Electric in 2015, has historically had a smaller footprint in the travel segment of the cobranded credit card business than some of its competitors, including American Express, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase.

“Synchrony Financial is pleased to continue expanding its offerings in the travel sector with a valued partner like Cathay Pacific,” Synchrony executive vice president Tom Quindlen said Tuesday in a press release.
