Tech Bytes: 1st Union Promotes Exec to Top Internet Job

First Union Corp. has realigned its senior executive management team to reflect its increased focus on the Internet.

David M. Carroll, president of First Union Florida, has been named executive vice president of Internet and telephone banking, marketing, and the Future Bank initiative. He will relocate to Charlotte.

The restructuring is in keeping with First Union's announcement this week that it is intensifying efforts to switch branch customers to the Internet. It plans to spend at least $300 million on the Internet in the next two years, hoping to increase its on-line customer total from 700,000 to 1.5 million by Dec. 31 and to five million by yearend 2001.

Mr. Carroll, an 18-year veteran of First Union, was instrumental in developing Future Bank, a three-year effort aimed at automating branch services, a spokesman said. He will continue to work closely with Jack Antonini, who will remain executive vice president for the consumer banking group.

Mr. Carroll's prior post, president of First Union Florida, is to be filled by Benjamin P. Jenkins 3d, who was president of the Middle Atlantic region. Mr. Jenkins is succeeded by Malcolm C. Everett 3d, president of First Union Carolinas.
