Tech Bytes: A Connecticut Thrift Hires 800 Support

Savings Bank of Manchester has hired 800 Support as the help desk for people using Microsoft Corp.'s Money 98 software.

The $1.1 billion-asset savings bank began its on-line banking program with Money 98 in November. 800 Support, which operates corporate call centers and end-user help desks, troubleshoots such technical questions as how to connect to the Internet, configure modems, and navigate Web sites and personal finance software.

800 Support works in tandem with the staff at the bank's Answer Center, which handles calls about account balances and statements, funds transfers, paying bills electronically and other banking questions.

"Outsourcing supports the efforts of the Answer Center without having to expand staff," said Chris Martin, senior vice president at the bank.
