Tech Bytes: Checkfree Reports $5.3M Loss for Quarter

Checkfree Corp., which provides a range of electronic commerce products, reported a net loss of $5.3 million, or 13 cents per share, for its second quarter of fiscal 1997, ended Dec. 31.

The loss, which came on quarterly revenues of $38.5 million, compares to a year-earlier loss of $123,000.

Excluding an adjustment for purchased profits resulting from the acquisition of Servantis Systems Inc. last year, Checkfree had a net loss of $4.2 million for the quarter, or 10 cents per share.

For the six months ending Dec. 31, Checkfree reported a net loss of $13.1 million or 31 cents per share.

In a separate announcement, Checkfree said it had completed the acquisition of Intuit Services Corp. from Intuit Inc.

Checkfree exchanged 12.6 million shares of its common stock for Intuit Services.

Checkfree, based in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross, Ga., provides processing for banking through touch-tone phones and PCs. It also provides a range of wholesale bank technology services.
