Tech Bytes: Portal, Verifone Linking Payments Products

Portal Software Inc. said it has agreed to integrate Verifone Inc.'s vPOS payment software into the Infranet customer management and billing systems for Internet service providers.

The Verifone software, designed for Internet merchants and compatible with both the SSL and SET security protocols, affords Portal customers direct and efficient connections to financial institutions for on-line payment processing.

The alliance grew out of Verifone's strategy of distributing through Internet aggregators and Internet service providers, or ISPs. Steve Sommer, Portal's vice president of business development, said the ready availability of Verifone's software provided a "time-to-market advantage."

Portal is one of about 50 ISP-oriented software vendors in strategic alliances with Verifone's parent, Hewlett-Packard Co. Of these, 18 were announced at the end of September, including Belle Systems, Globalcast, iPass, Kana Communications, RealNetworks, Silknet, and Software.com.
