Tech bytes: Rochester's 1st Federal On World Wide Web

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Rochester has established a home page on the World Wide Web.

The $6.9 billion-asset savings institution said it would initially use the on-line posting as an information site but plans to expand its Internet-based offerings later.

"Our intent in establishing a Web site is to gain experience so that we will be better prepared to interact with customers in the future," said Linda L. Williams, president of First Federal.

"It is an important step toward further expansion of our fast-growing telephone and home banking services."

According to the bank, about 65 financial institutions have established home pages on the Web, but few use the international computer network to actually deliver banking services.

The First Federal Home page consists of 80 pages of information. Most of these include hypertext, which lets users jump quickly to new sections by clicking on key words.
