Tech Bytes: Verifone, Motorola Push Electronic Payments

Verifone Inc. has entered into a global marketing alliance with Motorola Inc. to promote secure electronic payments over wireless data networks.

The companies will join in sales, marketing, and business development efforts and explore the integration of Motorola Series 500 wireless modems with Verifone point of sale systems. Businesses would be able to handle credit and debit card payments securely over radio frequencies.

"Aligning Motorola's communications expertise with a company such as Verifone will enable world-class, end-to-end wireless payment solutions ... as well as provide additional value for our networks," said Chris White of Motorola's wireless data infrastructure division.

Separately, Verifone announced a new product distribution program that it calls the Platinum Channel. Eligible companies, U.S. resellers that have exceeded sales and performance standards, will get access to enhanced training, technical and marketing support, and market development funding.
