Tech Bytes: Visa Demonstrates SET Global Capability

Visa International demonstrated the international capability of the Secure Electronic Transaction protocol at the recent annual meeting of its Latin America and Caribbean region.

During the meeting in Puerto Rico, Visa regional board member and Visa Argentina president Egidio Ianella bought a bottle of wine electronically from the Disco supermarket chain in Argentina.

In a second transaction, a book on CD-ROM was bought from Kalunga, an office supply merchant in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Visa said these were the first international Internet purchases under the SET 1.0 standard, the final version of the protocol that is just coming on the market. Microsoft Corp., Verisign Inc., RSA Data Security Inc., Trintech of Ireland, and Tandem Computers Inc. contributed technology to the demonstration.
