Tech Type: Bank South Hires Citi Vet to Head Its Back Office

ATLANTA - Bank South Corp. has chosen a longtime Citicorp executive to become its first chief information officer.

The Atlanta-based regional last week announced the appointment of Bernard Baum, who most recently headed Citibank's global technology resources area. Mr. Baum will lead Bank South's integration and reengineering efforts and help it to develop alternate delivery channels.

Lately, Bank South has pushed to provide home banking services and other means of electronic commerce. Mr. Baum is now entrusted with leading the $6.9 billion-asset bank's charge into this increasingly vital area of business.

"As we focus on creating and enhancing channels of delivery for our customers, such as screen phone, teleservices, interactive video, and PC and home banking, Bernie's knowledge and experience will be a tremendous asset," said chairman and chief executive Patrick L. Flinn.

Earlier in his 17-year stint at Citibank, Mr. Baum handled technology resources in the cash management services department and managed technology development and operations in Japan.

"I have confidence that Bernie will guide us to the level of technology necessary for Bank South to continue to deliver tomorrow's bank today to our growing customer base," Mr. Flinn said.
