Visa U.S.A. Inc. issued a statement following its board meeting Friday that reaffirmed its intention to maintain "a strong Visa brand while providing member banks with flexibility in enhancing relationships with customers."
The statement came a week after two senior Citigroup Inc. executives resigned from the board in a dispute over the prominence of Visa's brand and other issues.
Coming out of what he said was "a great meeting" in Pebble Beach, Calif., Visa executive vice president William Stewart said the board was solidly behind Visa branding principles. Moving the logo to the back of the card was discussed, he said, and is on the agenda for the next quarterly meeting.
The theme is "strong brand, maximum flexibility," he said, suggesting that the logo could move in response to banks' desires and profitability concerns.
