Walmart Japan Holdings G.K. and the Japanese issuer Credit Saison Co. Ltd. are planning to introduce Oct. 1 a cobranded American Express Co. card.
Consumers will pay no annual fee for the Walmart Card Saison American Express Card, which will provide a 1% daily discount at the country's 371 stores operated by Walmart Japan's subsidiary Seiyu G.K., including Livin and Sunny stores.
On the 5th and 20th of each month, Walmart will raise the discount to 5%. The card was announced last week.
Walmart Japan expects the card to attract new customers, according to spokeswoman Miki Sawada in an interview.
"The card will help us promote our 'Everyday Low Price' concept in practicality, and we hope it will not only retain our existing customers, but also bring us more new customers," she said.
The card will also offer rewards points for spending at some other merchants, and users will earn double points for purchases made outside Japan, Credit Saison said.
Walmart Japan is a unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, Ark.
