Major banking stocks slipped lower on Wednesday as the stock market itself sold off sharply for a second day on fears about interest rates and political instability in Russia.

Bankers Trust New York Corp. fell 75 cents to $77.125, BankAmerica Corp. was off 25 cents to $44.875, and Barnett Banks Inc. lost 37.5 cents to $40.375. Citicorp slipped 25 cents to $34.75, and National City Corp. edged down 37.5 cents to $24.

The Dow Jones industrial average was off 25.71 to 3,716.92. Interest rates in the money markets fell modestly after stiff increases on the previous day.
