Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. hired Marc Lieberman as president and chief executive officer of its European insurance arm, Hartford Life Ltd.
Mr. Lieberman, who began in the new post Monday, succeeded Michael Kalen, who is returning to the United States as senior vice president of finance. Mr. Kalen will remain in Europe until Sept. 1 to help with the transition.
As chief executive of Hartford Life Ltd., Mr. Lieberman oversees strategic direction, general management, and profit and loss.
The unit, which started operating in the United Kingdom in 2005, has its European headquarters in Ireland and offers retirement savings and income products. Mr. Lieberman is to report to Peter Smyth, the executive vice president of Hartford's international markets group who is based in the company's headquarters in Simsbury, Conn.
Mr. Lieberman was the chief executive of ING New Zealand. Previously he was a managing director at Constellation Group, a New York specialty finance company serving mutual fund and annuity companies. Before that, he was a senior director in Wachovia Corp.'s capital markets, investment management, investment banking, and structured finance divisions.
Hartford had $25.9 billion in revenue last year and has operations in Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and Ireland.
