Global daily trading volume in exchange-traded funds in the first half of the year increased 18.4% from a year earlier, to $14.8 billion, according to data from Morgan Stanley.
Assets under management in the funds rose 8.5%, Morgan Stanley said Monday.
Exchange-traded funds, which are listed and trade like equities, track indexes of stocks, bonds, or other assets without requiring the investors to buy all the index's components.
The funds now account for around a quarter of the underlying trading volume in stocks on U.S. exchanges, according to Morgan Stanley. There are 390 funds with $336 billion of assets managed by 46 managers on 31 exchanges worldwide.
