In Brief: Rich Investors Seen as Less Confident

Confidence among affluent investors declined last month, according to a study by Spectrem Group, a Chicago research firm.

The Spectrem Affluent Investor Index declined two points in January to a neutral reading of 10, Spectrem said last week.

The index, which measures the investment outlook of households with $500,000 or more of investable assets, had a neutral outlook for nine of the 12 months last year. In December it rallied eight points to move into mildly bullish territory for the first time since February 2005.

The January drop erased enough of that gain to push the index back to neutral territory.

The Spectrem Millionaire Investor Index, which measurers the investment outlook of households with at least $1 million of investable assets, was unchanged in January, at 15. Last month was the millionaires' fifth straight in mildly bullish territory.
