Hi, I'm Chana Schoenberger. I'm the editor-in-chief of American Banker and I'm here at Payments Forum 2026 in San Francisco, where all week we've been talking to payments leaders about what's going on in the payment space. I have with me here Umar Farooq, who is the global co-head of JP Morgan Payments. Welcome.
Umar Farooq (00:27):
Thank you very much for having me.
Chana Schoenberger (00:29):
One of the issues with, I guess, clients or companies in general is they're not all as good as at technology as you guys or as each other. How do you deal with differing tech ability and there's a difference in their interest and ability to do and to want real-time payments?
Umar Farooq (00:46):
So from our point of view, I think real-time payments is just one of the offerings. Obviously we have everything from wires, which have been around a long time to real-time payments and ACH all the way to blockchain-based programmable payments. And you're right that clients do have a different affinity and capability when it comes to innovation or trying new rails. Our approach is though to meet them where they are. So there are clients that like coming to us through their ERP systems or their treasury management systems and we have a lot of connectivity into the standard platforms across the world. There are clients who are probably a little bit smaller. I mean, these are not small companies as several billion dollar companies, but they like interacting with us through web interfaces. So we have the best ranked digital channel out there for these clients according to Greenwich and some of the other companies.
(01:38):
We basically have clients that are then connected to us much more electronically and they are much more forward leaning. So they could be interacting with us through APIs and now they have start to get into clients who are much more real-time direct connectivity. And then finally, we have clients who are now in the new blockchain tokenized world are bringing their own wallets to our infrastructure. So it's a full set spectrum of offerings, but our view is no matter how you want to connect with us, we will connect with you and no matter how you want to use our product, we will make it work for you.
Chana Schoenberger (02:16):
All right. So small C Catholic. Yep.
