Cecil W. Sewell Jr. has been named president and chief operating officer of Centura Banks Inc. and its principal subsidiary, Centura Bank, Rocky Mount, N.C.
Mr. Sewell will be responsible for Centura's day-to-day operations. He will work closely with chairman and chief executive officer Robert R. Mauldin, who had retained the title of president since assuming the company's top job in January.
Centura Banks operates 147 banking offices in 84 communities throughout North Carolina.
The Cleveland-based bank is projecting steady growth in net interest income even as credit losses remain manageable. But Chairman and CEO Chris Gorman also said that he thinks a recession is likely.
