Merchants Bank Names Executive

NEW ENGLAND

Merchants Bank, Burlington, Vt., has promoted Michael R. Tuttle to chief operating officer and Janet Spitler to chief financial officer.

Both positions at the $582 million-asset bank had been vacant since 1995.

Mr. Tuttle, who was executive vice president and senior credit officer, will continue to oversee the bank's credit division. He first joined Merchants in 1986 and was a vice president and credit review officer until 1990. Then he left for Howard Bank; there he was manager of small-business lending until 1992, when he became executive vice president and senior commercial loan officer. He returned to Merchants in 1995.

Ms. Spitler, who was Merchants' controller and before that its assistant controller, joined in 1990 after several years in public accounting.
