SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – A team of thieves tunneled through a sports equipment store early yesterday morning trying to break to the ATM at the Lockheed CU branch but were thwarted by their own plans.

The bandits broke into the credit union and tried to cut into the ATM safe with an acetylene torch, but smoke from the torch set off the smoke alarm, sending the thieves fleeing from the scene.
Deputies received a call at 4:20 a.m. and reported that the suspects destroyed security monitors, but did not get away with any money.
