NEW YORK-Sales of ATMs in the U.S. in 2008 have not seen the kind of declines many had predicted as a result of a slowing economy.
In fact, Diebold, North Canton, Ohio, reported first-quarter revenue for its ATM manufacturing unit as $495.8 million, an 8.1% increase over the $458.9 million reported in the same period one year earlier. The company said it had installed 7,400 deposit automation ATMs in the U.S. as of April 30, according to a report in ATM & Debit News, an affiliate of Credit Union Journal.
A number of major banks, including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase & Co., and Wells Fargo & Co. have been adding envelope-free ATMs, including some that accept bulk-cash and bulk-check deposits. A number of credit unions, meanwhile, including BECU in Seattle have been purchasing additional multi-functional kiosks, helping to further drive sales.
