ILLAWARRA, Australia – An Australian credit union is trying to recover after several hundred members were victimized by a card-skimming operation.
Illawarra Credit Union said the perpetrators may be a sophisticated card-skimming ring that is operating in a number of countries. According to police, members have seen as much as $9,900 removed from their accounts through bogus transactions in foreign countries, mostly in Europe, as well as Australia.
Illawarra Credit Union, which operates as a unit of Community Alliance CU, has begun replacing affected members credit and debit cards. Other institutions also have been victimized. Police believe thieves replaced terminals at some merchant locations to steal the data.
