Citing Potential Competition, CEO Exits CUNA Mutual Board

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. - Indicating his credit union will likely be entering into competing business lines, William B. Eckhardt, CEO of the $4-billion Alaska USA Federal Credit Union said he is stepping down from the board of CUNA Mutual Group, effective immediately.

Eckhardt has been a member of the board of the Madison, Wis.-based CUNA Mutual since 2005. CUNA Mutual released a statement in which it said the "decision to resign as a result of anticipated competing business obligations at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union." No further details on what those business obligations might be.

The 390,000-member Alaska USA has been expanding its footprint over the past year by acquiring two failed credit unions in California.
