ROCKFORD, Ill. – A collections supervisor at Rock Valley CU was sentenced yesterday to nine years behind bars for stealing $122,110 from the Loves Park credit union.
Thomas Miles, 42, admitted in a plea agreement that he embezzled approximately 163 checks payable to the credit union from loan customers. After ordering credit union tellers to cash the checks and issue money orders, Miles would then deposit the money orders into his own savings account that was held at Amcore Bank. Afterward, Miles would transfer those funds back to his checking account at Rock Valley CU. He used the embezzled funds to pay for personal expenses.
In an effort to hide his activities, Miles credited portions of other checks the credit union received to accounts that should have been credited with the checks he took.
Miles was sentenced to nine years in federal prison without parole, three years of supervised release following imprisonment and ordered to pay $122,110 in restitution.
