The Weekly News featured a long story with photos on Black Hills FCU in South Dakota and its rapidly growing annual school drive. This year's effort distributed more than 50,000 school supplies to 38 schools, which in turn distributed them to 3,700 kids. The Montgomery Advertiser provided coverage of the "philosophy of credit unions (and) people helping people" in a story on how Alabama State Employees CU has allowed ASI Credit Union to operate from its offices after ASI was forced to vacate its Harahan, La. home by Hurricane Gustav. The story quoted Ned McHenry, CEO of ASE, and Mignhon Tourne, CEO of ASI, on how the arrangement came to be. Twenty employees from ASI set up shop in ASE's Wetumpka, Ala. branch. "It's been fantastic being here," Tourné told the newspaper. "We couldn't ask for more. It's that Southern hospitality; you can't beat it."
The Central Maine Morning Sentinel published a piece on credit unions in the state that are offering low-interest loans for people to buy heating equipment for their homes as winter approaches. "This year for the first time, a majority-about two-thirds-of credit unions in Maine are offering low- or no-interest loans to help residents warm their homes," the story said, noting heating oil is now $4 per gallon. Quoted in the story were representatives of the Maine league.
