CUNA Pours More Funds Into Oregon’s Fifth House District

SALEM, Ore. – CUNA on Thursday spent another $52,260 on mailings boosting endangered House freshman Kurt Schrader, who is fighting against state Sen. Scott Bruun for his political life.

It was the third independent expenditure CUNA has made for Schrader in the last week, totaling $104,060 for the House member voted this week as the CU Association of Oregon’s Lawmaker of the Year.

The independent expenditure must be conducted separately from Schrader’s campaign under federal election laws. CUNA also has contributed the maximum $10,000 directly to Schrader’s campaign.

CUNA has made $710,000 in independent campaign expenditures for six candidates over the past month, a new high, including a bid last weekend for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and one this week for House Minority Whip Roy Blunt in his campaign for a Missouri Senate seat.

With about $1 million of cash still on hand CUNA is expected to make several more independent expenditures on behalf of favored lawmakers in the final days of the election.
