'Forget the Day, Get Ice Cream'

RALEIGH, N.C.-With other credit unions urging consumers to visit their branches on Bank Transfer Day, State Employees' Credit Union here offered some different advice: go somewhere else.

In particular, the credit union urged consumers to "Spend the day with your family! GO GET ICE CREAM!"

The $23-billion SECU said it did so because moving financial institutions can't be accomplished in just one day, and typically requires 30 to 60 days. Instead, the credit union added additional contact center staff and mailed out switch kits to those looking to move. The switch kit is also available at www.ncsecu.org.

In January of this year SECU launched a Checking Switch program and has been helping consumers with that process. SECU also assigns specific staff members to help new members establish a plan and to initiate phone calls to employers on payroll direct deposits, or to draft letters to insurance agents, utility companies and other businesses for ACH items.
