PURCHASE, N.Y. – MasterCard yesterday said it removed Global Payments Inc., the transaction processor involved in a recent major data breach, from its list of approved service vendors.
The move follows Visa’s decision to remove the Atlanta transaction processor from a similar list it maintains stemming from a breach Global Payments disclosed in late March.
Global Payments said late Tuesday that multiple card brands had removed it from their list of PCI compliant-service providers. PCI refers to payment card industry standards that Visa, MasterCard and other card networks require merchants and other companies handling sensitive card data to adhere to.
Global Payments said its processing system had suffered a breach that may have exposed up to 1.5 million cardholder accounts in North America to hackers.
