NEW ORLEANS – An Arkansas man on Wednesday pleaded guilty to eight armed robberies in four states in three weeks, including one in nearby Metairie, then one at Alabama CU, 300 miles away in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the next day.
George Cuthbertson, 54, a former resident of the Mississippi River Delta town of Brinkley, robbed the Omni Bank branch in Metairie by showing a note saying he had a gun and made off with $2,680. The next day, he carried out a similar robbery at the Alabama credit union, but a witness caught the Arkansas license number on his getaway van and investigators matched Cuthbertson's picture with one from a surveillance photograph at Omni Bank.
The robberies stretched from June 11 to July 3.
He got the name "Homer Simpson Bandit" because he allegedly was spotted on camera inside a Kroger buying donuts just before police say he handed a note to the bank teller demanding money.
