Hudson River Teachers Federal Credit Union, a $51-million institution based in Mohegan Lake, N.Y., has changed its name to Hudson River Financial Federal Credit Union, effective immediately.
"Our new name… better reflects who we are: a credit union that services a broad range of members, broader than only teachers," said Thomas J. Powers Jr., chief executive officer of the credit union, in a statement. "Having teachers in our name perpetuated the misperception that we only serve teachers, which has not been so for a very long time."
In addition to serving teachers in 29 school districts in northern Westchester and Rockland counties, credit union membership is also open to all students, employees and members of the Boards of Education of those school districts, members of select labor unions, companies, and partner groups based in Northern Westchester and Rockland counties, family members of those in membership-eligible groups, and individuals retired from those member groups.
The credit union was originally established in 1938 to serve the employees of the public schools in the communities of Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Sleepy Hollow, Ossining, Peekskill, Croton-on-Hudson, and Ardsley.
