EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – A one-time temporary custodian at Connecticut Natural Gas FCU was charged last week with trying to break into the credit union’s ATM.
Police said Juan Castro, 43, had full knowledge of the building, including the locations of keys and security patterns. Police said Castro unsuccessfully attempted to break into the building on Aug. 14, and security cameras were installed following the incident.
Ten days later, police said, the suspect was back and this time was able to access the building. He set to work attempting to break into an employee ATM as well as a safe that funded the machine.
The man used a pry bar, hammer, and a long screwdriver in his attempt, police said. He was unsuccessful, but did manage to cause severe damage to the machine estimated to cost more than $12,000 to replace.
The suspect fell backward while trying to crack the safe and his face was clear to security cameras, police said.
