BOSTON – Massachusetts became the latest state to tire of waiting for congressional action and pass its own comprehensive identity theft legislation. The new law, signed by Gov. Deval Patrick last week, will require that parties to a data breach notify their customers in a timely manner. The law also gives consumers the right to freeze their credit file, something a dozen other states allow to prevent new accounts from being fraudulently opened, and puts into effect strict new standards for safeguarding consumer information.
