BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Legacy Community FCU has been buying lunches, covering haircut costs and pumping gas for $1.99 a gallon.
The last chore was the job of CEO Joe McGee, who also was washing windshields at a Birmingham gas station where the CU recently subsidized the low-cost fuel for two hours. “We sold 2,700 gallons in two hours and created quite a stir,” said McGee, who shared that the stunt cost about $2,000.
The $320-millon CU also created a stir within Birmingham last month with its “Do Something Good Today” community outreach campaign, a takeoff on the popular Pay it Forward promotions in which the credit union performs random acts of kindness for individuals and asks them to pass it on. “We just hope this has a positive impact within our community and gets people feeling a little better about things,” said McGee.
Local residents now can also feel good about LCFCU, which waited until the gas giveaway to reveal that it was the culprit behind the six-week campaign. McGee said the CU has not tracked how much it gave away over the last month and a half, saying the gifts ranged in size from a lunch to $400 in gifts for a child whose parents lost their home in a fire.
