SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A man escaping a robbery at a San Antonio CU branch yesterday morning ran over a police officer who caught up with the getaway vehicle.
The officer was hospitalized after his leg was run over while he tried to pull the keys out of the ignition of the getaway car, police said. The officer managed to fire two shots after being dragged alongside the car. The suspect was wounded in the arm by the officer's gunfire.
The chase ensued after the suspect robbed a drive-thru teller by telling her had a live grenade.
Within minutes, he was surrounded by police in an Exxon parking lot just a few blocks away. One officer went up to the getaway car and tried to remove the keys from the ignition when the suspect drove off, dragging the officer. The officer shot the man in the shoulder right before the officer was run over.
A bomb squad was called out to check the getaway car for a grenade but nothing was found.
