BASKING RIDGE, N.J. – In what has become one of the shortest-lived proposed fees, Verizon canceled a $2 "convenience fee" for every one-time online or phone payment customers make, less than 24 hours after it was announced.
Overwhelmingly negative consumer reaction, much of it widely reported in the press and in online discussions, led to the cancellation.
The FCC had indicated it planned to investigate the fee prior to reversal by Verizon.
“At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers,” said CEO Dan Mead in a released statement. “Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.”
The fee was to have gone into effect Jan. 15.
