NAFCU Names 3 Paul Revere Award Winners
WASHINGTON-At NAFCU's 2008 Congressional Caucus, Alfred Scipio of Treasury Department FCU, Lynette Smith of Washington Gas Light FCU and Carla Decker of District Government Employees FCU were recognized as the credit union grassroots activists of the year with the presentation of the 2008 Paul Revere Awards.
The awards, presented annually at NAFCU's lobbying event of the year, recognize individuals who regularly and effectively carry the credit union banner.
"Industry leaders who enthusiastically extol the virtues of credit unions before government and the public are of vital importance to the advancement of the credit union movement," said NAFCU SVP-Government Affairs Dan Berger. "We're extremely grateful to these individuals for going above and beyond in this effort this year."
SECU Introduces Volunteer Program
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-State Employees CU (SECU) has introduced "SECU C.A.R.E.S.," an employee volunteer program that stands for "Committed, Able, Resourceful Employees in Service."
The first volunteer effort will focus on a partership with Ronald McDonald House, which provides housing for families near the hospital at which an ill child is being treated. Representatives of its branch offices have participated in a walk-a-thon fundraiser and a pizza and salad night as fundraisers for the charity.
CUs Invited To 'Bank On Philadelphia'
PHILADELPHIA-Philadelphia's financial services and financial education providers, including interested credit unions, are being invited to attend an introductory presentation for "Bank on Philadelphia," to be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, on Oct. 22.
The Pennsylvania CU League said its initiative is spearheaded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Office of Philadelphia City Controller Alan Butkovitz. The purpose of the program is to increase access to financial services and financial education for low-and moderate-income families and individuals.
Philadelphia is one of eight communities nationwide to participate in this program. Association SVP Mike Wishnow serves on the steering committee for the Philadelphia pilot program.

Delinquency/Foreclosure Seminar Offered
WASHINGTON-NAFCU will offer insight on how the mortgage crisis will impact credit unions at its next Hot Topic Meeting in Tampa Bay, Fla. The seminar, titled "Increasing Delinquencies, Foreclosures and Regulatory Scrutiny: Survival of Credit Unions in the Current Economy," will be held at the Hyatt Regency Tampa on Oct. 29 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. EDT.
