'Credit Union' Can Be Omitted

OLYMPIA, Wash.-State-chartered credit unions are not required to use the words "credit union" on their public signage, the state regulator ruled. The interpretative ruling furthers the move to blur the marketing distinctions between credit unions and banks. However, those CUs that want to use a trade name that differs from their registered credit union name must notify the Department of Financial Institutions of its plans, and avoid any names that may be misleading, inaccurate, deceptive or misrepresent the credit union's services, the DFI ruled.

SECU Fndtn. Awards Scholarships

RALEIGH, N.C.-For a third consecutive year, the State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) Foundation awarded "People Helping People" scholarships to each of the traditional public high schools in North Carolina, bringing the total investment in the education of these students to $11 million. The four-year college scholarships, valued at $10,000 each, were awarded to graduating seniors for study at one of the 16 constituent campuses in the University of North Carolina System.

Fed Invites CUs To Participate

DETROIT-The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's Detroit branch has invited MIchican's individual credit unions to help promote financial literacy by serving on its Money $mart Week Advisory Council. For the past four years the Fed bank has hosted the Michigan Money $mart Week. The Michigan league already serves on the Council.

Treasury Dept. Honors 2 CUs

WASHINGTON-Two credit unions were among the nine "Go Direct Champions" recognized by the U.S. Department of Treasury for helping people switch their Social Security payments from paper checks to direct deposit. The "Go Direct Champions" were: Washington Mutual, Seattle; Citibank, New York; Chase, New York; Woodforest National Bank, The Woodlands, Texas; Commerce Bank National Association, Cherry Hill, N.J.; First National Bank Texas, Killeen; Interstate Unlimited FCU, Jesup, Ga.; Utilities Employees CU, Sinking Spring, Penn., and Guaranty Bank, Milwaukee, Wis.

Premier Rolls Out New Logo

GREENSBORO, N.C.-Premier Federal Credit Union has rolled out its new logo, designed to appeal to a generally younger target audience. It is the first redesign of the logo in 20 years. The update is part of an overall strategic branding campaign that ties in a new slogan, "The Premier Difference...experience it!". The CU worked with the North Carolina CU League's marketing department.
