Mr. Roberts has spent 41 years in banking. He had been the CEO of banks in Colorado and Kansas for 15 years before joining F.N.B. in 1997 as the president and CEO of its Metropolitan National Bank in Youngstown, Ohio. That bank was merged in 2002 into First National Bank, which Mr. Roberts joined as a senior executive vice president and its chief operating officer. He took over as its president and CEO in January 2005.

In a press release, Mr. Roberts, 58, called his 11 years at F.N.B. the "most fulfilling" of his career. He was involved in six acquisitions there, including its April purchase of the $1.8 million-asset Omega Financial Corp. of State College, Pa.

"I feel I have achieved my objectives and look forward to a new phase in my life, which includes travel and time with my wife, children and grandchildren," he said. F.N.B. said that it will announce its succession plan Tuesday.
