Gemplus Corp. said it has completed development, along with Barclays Bank of London and two telecommunications companies, of an advanced smart card system for mobile communications.

The system conforms to GSM Phase 2+, a new international standard that allows banking and other services to be delivered to mobile phones. Gemplus, Barclays, Cellnet, and Alcatel Telecom developed a service that allows Barclays customers to see account information and mini-statements on the telephone screens.

Gemplus, the French-owned leader in chip card manufacturing, supplies SIM cards-subscriber identity modules-to 120 operators of GSM (global system for mobile communications) programs worldwide.

With the company's SIM tool kit, "the GSM operator can now easily introduce applications and value-added services truly tailored to meet their market's particular needs," said Philippe Martineau, director of Gemplus' telecommunications business unit for the Americas.
