In Brief: AIG Unit Hires Exec to Run Private Equity

American International Group's global investment unit has announced the hiring of Robert T. Thompson to run its alternative investments group.

Mr. Thompson, who will be based in New York, is to be a senior managing director and report to Win J. Neuger, an executive vice president and the chief investment officer at American International Group Inc. and the global investment group's chairman and chief executive officer. He is to oversee all the company's private equity and hedge fund activities.

Mr. Thompson is a founder, and was the managing member, of Ferrer Freeman Thompson & Co., a Greenwich, Conn., private equity fund that invests in the health-care industry.

Before Ferrer Freeman Thompson, he was a managing director and the equity group leader at GE Capital Corp., where he founded the private equity businesses and developed activities throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He also was a consultant at Bain & Co. and a commercial lending officer at the former Chemical Bank.

The AIG global investment unit comprises a group of international investment companies that provide advice, investment products, and asset management services to clients worldwide. Its companies are subsidiaries AIG.
