CNA Financial Corp. in Chicago has announced the hiring of D. Craig Mense to be chief financial officer, succeeding Robert V. Deutsch, who was CFO from August 1999 to October 2004.
Mr. Mense joins CNA from St. Paul Travelers, where he most recently was the president and chief executive of its global runoff operations, the Chicago company said on Friday. He was responsible for all discontinued businesses, including Gulf Insurance Group, domestic assumed reinsurance, and international reinsurance.
Gulf Insurance Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Travelers Property Casualty, was a leading player in the specialty lines market, offering a broad range of specialty business coverage, including products designed for financial institutions, the entertainment industry, and sports organizations.
As of Nov. 29, Mr. Mense is to report to Stephen W. Lilienthal, CNA's chairman and chief executive officer. He is to be responsible for the company's corporate finance department, which provides asset and capital management, investor relations, corporate accounting, financial reporting, corporate tax, financial regulation, and internal audit services to the organization.
