Mr. Johnson, 49, will focus on expanding the New York unit's property and casualty business throughout the Mid-America region and will be based in its Minneapolis office.
He was a senior vice president at Willis Re Inc., where he was a broker in both its property casualty and life and health specialty practices.
Guy Carpenter, which made the announcement Thursday, is a risk and reinsurance specialist that creates solutions for clients globally through 2,600 professionals.
