Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. announced Wednesday it appointed Michael R. Fanning to be a senior vice president and chief operating officer of its U.S. insurance group.

Mr. Fanning, 43, was vice president of new individual business at MetLife Inc. Previoulsy, he worked at Reliastar Financial Corp. and Mutual Benefit Financial Service Corp.
The U.S. Insurance Group includes the distribution, marketing, product management, finance, compliance, and operations for all of MassMutual's life insurance, disability income and long term care products sold in the U.S.
MassMutual, which is based in Springfield, Mass., had $395 billion in assets under management at the end of last year.
