Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. announced that Stuart H. Reese, chief executive officer and president, has also been named chairman of the board of directors.
The Springfield company said Monday that the board had approved the appointment and that it goes into effect Jan. 1. As chairman, Mr. Reese will succeed James R. Birle, who has been nonexecutive chairman since June 2005 and a member of MassMutual's board since 1992. Mr. Birle, 70, has been named lead director of the board.
Mr. Reese, 51, was named CEO and president in June 2005. Previously he was an executive vice president and the chief investment officer of MassMutual and chairman and CEO of Babson Capital Management LLC, a MassMutual subsidiary.
MassMutual had $395 billion of assets under management at the end of last year.
