Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. hired Michael R. Fanning as a senior vice president and the chief operating officer of its U.S. insurance group.

Mr. Fanning, 43, will oversee the group's business operations, which include distribution, marketing, product management, finance, and compliance for all of MassMutual's life insurance, disability income, and long-term care products. Before beginning his new jobs last week, he was a vice president of new individual business at MetLife Inc. Before that he had worked at ING Group NV's ReliaStar Financial Corp. and at Mutual Benefit Financial Service Corp.
